I was fortunate to participate in the "Sea of Life" exhibition at the Middle East Institute in Washington DC, a wonderful experience that allowed me to interact with visitors and display two of my sculptures. Co-curated by Hayfa Aljishi and Lyne Sneige, this group exhibition brought together fourteen Bahraini artists across mediums and generations to explore their connection to the natural environment and the symbolism of water.
The title "Sea of Life" plays on the concept of ‘The Tree of Life,’ a widespread symbol among certain cultures and religions. On Bahrain Island, both the sea and freshwater springs have been vital lifelines, tied to prosperity and regarded as precious resources to preserve. This nurtures a powerful bond between Bahrainis and their natural landscape.
Home to the ancient Dilmun civilization, Bahrain was described in the Epic of Gilgamesh as a heavenly paradise of everlasting youth. The deep roots between the island's rituals, mythology, and terrain are reflected in the 30 artworks. From photography to sculpture, they blend past and future, tradition and modernity, folktale and reality.
The exhibition, sponsored by The National Arts Council - Kingdom of Bahrain and the RAK Art Foundation, offers a glimpse into the legacy of Bahrain's pioneering artists, the evolving arts scene, and how younger generations are exploring new forms of expression. Collectively, the works convey a visual portrait of the island, its landscapes, and its potential as a wellspring of reflection, connection, and diverse futures imagined.
